Higher – Edenbridge

Song story. I decided this time, instead of making obscure references to lyrics in the text, I would actually embed the lyrics in the story.

I wonder where I am.  Trapped in a dark castle, how did I get here?  There’s a window with light filtering through.  I see clouds moving quickly, as if my perception of time is off.  I turn and study the walls, confused and disoriented.

Come and stay, make my day, take away the gray.
And set the wheels in motion.

I sit down on the stair, leading up to the window.  I cannot look at it.  The light repels me.

Down the road, what you do, come and fall into.
At the end of this day.

You can flee, you can be your own enemy.
At the end you will see no daylight.

I approach it.  I grasp the cold metal bars on the window, and attempt to pry the frame loose, in vain.

And you try, by and by, falling from the sky,
Like a nine days wonder.

Disgusted, I turn back.  There lie a cloak and two swords upon a table.  I am being watched.  Someone wishes for a duel. A masked figure appears in the reflection of a doorway in a mirror. I know that this person can tell me how I got here. He vanishes before I can turn around. I follow into the corridor. I do not see him, but there is a closed door to my side. He may be behind it. I kick at it, and it opens. I see him, with a sword raised, beckoning me to battle.

You can shine or resign, lay it on the line
Or you make a bid for power

We move into the corridor and I swing aggressively.

Vertigo, overflow, just a cameo
Silent as a whisper

Metal contacts with metal. I aim to force him back, out of the corridor, out of this dark castle, into the daylight. Rage begins to take hold of my soul, as he easily bats away my attacks.

Raising Cain, break the chain, gather new terrain.
Time and tide wait for no man ever.

We are now in daylight. I dash quickly away from him.

And your eyes are agleam like you’re in a dream
Getting out from under.

He runs towards me, jumps, sword in the air. I block with both my blades.

Give a little try, give a little more try.
Never fall in line for a fleeting moment.

He is now on the offensive.  He pushes me back despite my weapon advantage.

Be and end all, I am aiming high.
Climb a little higher.

My foot hits a ledge. I am against a wall. I veer to my right, around a corner of the castle, to get more room to move.

I don’t want to see your affected smile.
Not for anything, the time is nigh.

His sword makes contact with my skin. I lose a small amount of blood.

Lay it on the line and run the mile.
Reach a little higher.

I decide to use his first attack against him. I quickly dash forward, both swords raised, aiming to bring them down upon his head. He draws back. My blades come down harmlessly, but I see a sharp metal piece of his, aiming upwards, towards my middle. He drives his sword through me. I fall, clutching the wound. He bends over me. I reach a shaking hand forwards, to remove the mask and uncover his identity. The mask falls. The face is mine own. Darkness engulfs my vision.

Give a little try, give a little more try.
Never fall in line for a fleeting moment.
Be and end all, I am aiming high.
Climb a little higher.
I don’t want to see your affected smile.
Not for anything, the time is nigh.
Lay it on the line and run the mile.
Reach a little higher.

I am inside the castle again.  I move forward through another doorway, in a trance. There are six large candles and six small candles, in a circle. There is a mask in the center.  I recognize it as the mask of my killer. I slowly pick up the mask. Beneath is a small gleaming crystal.

I don’t want
Not for anything

I bring the crystal slowly to my chest.

So you won’t run the mile.
A little higher.
Reach a little higher.

The window is no longer barred, but I find no need for freedom. I remain here, with the crystal, forever, greed having consumed my mortal soul.
